BJD Doll Size Guide | Understanding BJD Scales

or beginners who are new to BJD dolls, one of the most confusing questions is often: What do “scale”, “SD”, “MSD”, or terms like “70cm uncle body” mean?

In fact, BJD sizes are not named simply according to the doll’s actual height. Many new collectors mistakenly think BJDs are categorized purely by their height. These size tags actually follow the classic proportional rules for ball-jointed dolls. Once you figure out these size groups, picking matching bodies, wigs and outfits becomes way simpler, and you can quickly find a scale that fits your collection taste.

1. What Defines a BJD Size?

BJD sizes are usually classified according to the doll’s full standing height.

Height Measurement Standard

Official BJD height rules:

· Does not include hair or fluffy wig height

· Does not include shoe thickness

· Standard measurement: Top of the head to the bottom of the feet

Sitting Height Is Not Used for Size Classification

BJD sizes are determined only by standing height. Sitting height will not change the doll’s size category.

2. What Does BJD Scale Mean?

The "scale" system for BJDs originates from real human body proportions. We take the average adult human height of 180cm as the standard, then shrink the ratio to get each doll size.

· 1/3 scale = 1/3 of an adult human’s height

· 1/4 scale = 1/4 of an adult human’s height

Simply put, the scale number represents the proportional relationship between the doll and a real adult.
